Tips for Pastor Search Committees: The purpose of this site is to facilitate the growing need for networking among pastors, pastor search committees, worship leaders, missionaries, evangelists, churches, and not-for-profit organizations that are Christian in nature, faith, and practice. Dr. Raymond Force, the director of Hitting Home, has been the Pastor of three Baptist churches in his life. During this time, he has learned many valuable lessons in his searches for pastorates. These lessons include the following: 1. Pastors and churches should not play the "dating game". In other words, it is best for churches and Pastors to be totally up front during the interviewing process. It is best for both sides to be totally up front and honest about their current condition and their goals. 2. It is best for pastor search committees to obtain as many resumes as possible. Pastors tend to be more efficient and diligent when it comes to "getting a job" than churches are about finding a pastor. Many search committees make the mistake of only obtaining a few resumes and then taking 2 to 3 months to analyze those resumes. This is a mistake. A good candidate is usually not on the "market" (forgive the expression) very long. Remember, his livelihood is at stake and he doesn't have to get 5 people to agree on meeting times and various decisions. Find a "go-getter" on the committee that has the time to make a few phone calls. I have seen committee after committee take weeks and even months to deliberate over resumes that are no longer active. 3. Be the Church that deserves good leadership. It's just a fact of life. Churches and organizations tend to attract the leaders they deserve. Your negative qualities will serve as a magnet and a filter. A magnet to those that have similar issues and a filter to those pastors that tend to be more functional in character and lifestyle. 4. Be diligent. The scriptures warn against being hasty, but they also warn against slothfulness also. 5. Pray. This is always the best policy. Pray for the person that God would have to fill your particular church job position.
